President’s Message

Dear Alumni,

Once again, we’ve suspended publication and mailing of the annual printed newsletter and instead published this online version for 2006. We are scheduled to resume the printed newsletter again in 2007. Please keep your information up-to-date, letting us know anytime you move, so your address remains current. In the meantime we are going to publish additional online issues of the newsletter periodically to keep up with events as they happen.

The amount of effort put into making the Centennial Celebration one of the landmark events ever in the history of Redondo High School was overwhelming. The Alumni Board along with many other support groups did a great job for our High School’s 100th Birthday. What a wonderful Day that was! Big thanks go out to all who participated!

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE – The Association really needs more voices and helpers to be part of our activities and to help add new plans to our agenda. Contact an Alumni Board member today to see how you can be of service!

CALENDARS! – Our latest project is the “Redondo Beach: Then and Now” 2007 Calendar which is available now locally or by mail. Check out the details below or visit our web site at ruhsAlumni.org. Many thanks go to Joan Atchison for her diligence, persistence and fantastic work to get this project completed – Great job Joan!

SCHOLARSHIPS – The Alumni Association awarded a total of $2,000 in scholarship funds to 8 graduating Sea Hawks at the 2006 Senior Awards Banquet this past year. The recipients were: Joshua Glover • Alisha Sabrowsky • John Smisko • Mary Elizabeth Swift-Taylor • Dylan Thomas • Katrina Watson • Danielle Wilson • and Kiersten Zeller. Congratulations to these new Alumni Association members!

B I N G O! – We are continuing to support the RUHS Booster Club Bingo by working whenever possible. This has been an important source of income to the Association and the Booster Club really could use more community support – all Alumni are welcome to volunteer to help us work Bingo, and better still, come and play on any Sunday too! See below for details.

ALUMNI WALK – We’ve been busy working closely with the District to redo the entire Alumni Walk. The new bricks have been ordered, replacing every single brick damaged or destroyed during the extensive renovation of the RUHS campus. What a nightmare this has been! Then, all 600+ bricks will be re-set. The whole project is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year. Baring any new developments, we are looking very much like we are on-track to make that deadline!

Please remember that the Alumni Walk, working Bingo for the Booster Club, the sale of Calendars, and Donations are the only sources of income to sustain our on-going Scholarship program benefiting RUHS Students each year.

Come join and be part of this legacy to the school we all so much appreciate!

Sincerely,
Gary Gomez, ‘83
President 2005-06, RUHS Alumni Association

Alumni Walk News

Alumni sign 1997

It is hard to believe that the Alumni Walk was only a dream in 1995. In the summer of 1997 initial construction began on the project and continued for several months. Dedicated October 17, 1997, the Alumni Walk became an instant success. Hollywood has its Walk of Fame along Hollywood Blvd. and Redondo High School now had its own Walk of Fame on the Alumni Walk.

So what happened? What was wrong with the first laying of the Walk? Why was the Walk torn up and the bricks stacked on pallets?

During the summer of 2004, the RUHS campus began undergoing an extensive construction project that is still going on today. Sadly the contractor hired by the school at the time did a very poor job rebuilding the walk and subsequently it all had to be redone.

Over time school officials had changed, ooooooooooooooo

contractors had been replaced and the overall RUHS construction project grew seriously behind schedule. The Alumni Walk looked like it was never going to be rebuilt.

What a nightmare this has been! Eventually all 600+ bricks were individually examined, their condition evaluated and then a determination made whether to redo the engraving or to keep the brick. Over 25% of the bricks needed to be replaced outright and another 15% were refreshed. Then all are being re-set.

The whole project is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year. Baring any new developments, we are on-track to make that deadline, then we will once again be able to “Honor … Past and Future Students of Redondo Union High School!”

The good news is the Walk is being returned to its original splendor, albeit with the minor bugs and configuration issues solved. The bricks make a nice gift for new grads at RUHS. Order yours by sending in this FORM.

Class Lists – Alumni Directory

How would you like to see a listing of your class members here on the web site? Searchable, even able to display information each class member approves for disclosure. Would that be something useful?

Class of 55 celebrates 50 years!

The Alumni Association is working very hard at being able to do just that. The technical details are just a part of the difficulty in presenting names to be searched. We also need to consider the privacy issues concerning the extent of detailed information we allow a classmate to reveal on the Internet.

Generated Class List

Even though the Alumni database has grown to over 25,000, we continually need your updates. Now too, with the dawn of posting class lists online, we encourage everyone to contact the Association to update your info and let us know the extent of details you would let us reveal.

Let us know what you think and add your updated information while you are at it. Time and technology have arrived making it possible for the Association to display the database for alumni to see! Contact the with updates or your views on this upcoming service.

Alumni participation in Booster Club BINGO!

This particular event helps to earn revenue to fund many Association causes benefiting RUHS students. You can help out right now by signing-up to work Bingo with the Alumni Association. Our last date for working Bingo this year was June 4, 2006. For 2007 we will be hosting on January 14th and June 24th, both Sundays. We ask that you please check your calendar to see when you will be able to help out.

As you may already know, Bingo is one of the ways the Association can earn revenue to help meet operating expenses and help the students as well! That is, after all, the BIG reason we are here, to help the RUHS Students!

We’ve finished obligations for 2006, now it’s time to volunteer for 2007! Next year’s approaching fast, so we need volunteers now for January 14th and June 24th. Bingo is an easy way for you to help out the Association.

Any other questions or comments can be directed to , , or , but keep in mind your volunteerism has its own rewards so come help us work Bingo! You will not regret it and you’ll have fun doing it too.

Booster Club Bingo

We obligate the Association to work Bingo for the Booster Club and scramble to sign people up to work those dates for us. Then there are “no-shows” or last minute “can't make its.” Of course — No Workers — No Money! Our only other source of major income is the Alumni Walk – so obviously we desperately need help out working Bingo!

There are two shifts for each time the Association signs-up to cover a Booster Club Bingo date. Keep in mind the Booster Club has been so good to us for so many years! Shifts are just three hours long. The 1st Shift begins at 11:00 am and the 2nd at 2:00 pm. We have usually chosen Sundays to work and each shift needs 5 people to man the floor.

Alumni General Membership Meeting 2006

Alumni Association meeting

2006 has been quite a year indeed for the RUHS Alumni Association. The amount of effort put into making the Centennial Celebration one of the landmark events ever was tremendous. From teachers, school staff, the Stakeholder’s Committee responsible for coordinating every aspect of the week-long event to the students themselves, the Centennial Celebration surely remembered RUHS’s past century.

On November 3, 2006, the Alumni Association held its annual General Membership Meeting to recap the year’s accomplishments and elect a new Board of Directors.

A Big THANK YOU to the Outgoing Board! Thank you Gary, Fran, Nancy, Pat and Gayle and all the members of the 2006 Alumni Board of Directors. Your dedication and commitment endured in spite of many obstacles that came up over the past year.
